Resume Checklist

When reading each other’s resumes, please carefully examine for certain features. Use the space under the item to write additional comments.

 

q      Is the name visible and appropriately placed?

 

q      Are addresses (including e-mail) accessible yet unobtrusive?

 

q      Is there enough white space?  Are sections balanced?

 

q      Are headings clearly defined and consistent?

 

q      Are the typefaces legible, readable, aesthetically pleasing?

 

q      Do the sections follow a smooth, fluent pattern?  Are they clearly separated?

 

q      If there is a job objective, is it concisely stated?

 

q      Has the writer properly highlighted educational background, relevant courses, significant professional training?

 

q      Are the job descriptions adequate, active, parallel?

 

q      Are the dates of employment clearly marked?

 

q      Has the writer noted requisite skills?

 

q      Has the writer overused certain words or phrases?

 

q      Are minor sections like “Personal” or Extracurricular Activities” given enough detail, specificity?

 

q      Should the writer include memberships more?

 

q      Is there an indications that references or a dossier are available? Should there be?

 

q      Can anything else be included to explain the writer’s capabilities and experience?  Summary qualifications?

 

q      Give two suggestions for the writer to work on in revision:


For the cover letter:

 

q       Is the letter well organized, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion?

 

Opening:

 

q       States the position applied for.

 

q       Identifies source information about the job.

 

q       Tries to avoid “I am a major in X applying for X,” but uses a more “you-friendly” opening.

 

Body:

 

q       Summarizes key qualifications, without repeating resume.  Includes both their education and their experience, and relates how these will enable the writer to contribute to the organization.

 

q       Includes specific examples, rather than generalizations.

 

q       Refers to resume.

 

Closing:

 

q       Indicates special considerations.

 

q       Expresses interest in an interview.

 

Tone:

 

q       Is self-assured but not brash or overconfident.

 

Style:

 

q       The letter is written in a style that is efficient and effective.  If necessary, refer the writer to one of the “8 principles.”

 

q       The writing is not only clear and concise but also correct.

 

Format: 

 

q       Uses an appropriate letter format (either block or modified block), with all the necessary information?
