English 203 Study Questions

WHO is writing or "speaking," and in what relation does he or she stand in relation fo the author of the work? WHAT sort of person? What does he/she reveal about him/herself? What does he/she hide? Is he/she isolated from others? from social concerns? What sorts of questions does he/she ask? Who is the author writing for (audience)? What relationship is he/she trying to develop with them? (teacher? Provocateur? friend? expert?)

WHY is he/she writing? Is a purpose stated or implied? Is it achieved?

WHAT themes does the work present? What themes emerge as peculiarly or compulsively "American" here?

HOW does this author present his/her subject uniquely in language and style? HOW are imagery and metaphor used? How does the genre matter: essay, letter, sermon, autobiography, fiction, poem?

WHEN was the piece written? How do time and place matter? What are the elements of "old" and "new" in the work, and how does it link to earlier literary traditions or thought?
