Scavenger Hunt -- Research for:
1.
When
and at what time did the spill occur?
Who says (give a source)?
2.
Get
the other "basic facts."
Where and how much? Can you find
different numbers of barrels (again, who says)?
3.
Find
at least one internet site that claims to be "scientific" about the
spill. Does it seem to be
“objective”? Give the address.
4.
Find
one that is put on by the victims (a "dotorg").
5.
Find
a government site (with suffix "dotgov").
6.
Find
pictures of the spill. Give the address.
7.
Find
the DEC website. Then, find the Spill and Response division and look for, "Then and Now," A two-page black and white flyer highlighting the
changes in oil spill response in 1989, the year of the Exxon Valdez
spill, and 1999. How many barrels were
they prepared (contingency plan) for then?
Now?
8. What can you find out about how pipeline cleanup crews responded?
9. Who heads up the DEC now?
10. What else can you find out about how Exxon treated the spill? What kinds of communications did they put out?
11. Give one other tidbit you found in your searching to share with the class.
