Self-evaluation
Your final revised paper is due at our exam time. With your final paper, include your self-evaluation. Your self-evaluation should have two parts: 1) an introduction to your two written papers: their contents and your revision of them, and 2) a discussion of some of the other texts that have been influential in some way.
Part 1. After you have written and revised your paper, set it
aside and reflect on it and the one that came before. Discuss how the papers
were revised (provide examples) and how these revisions are important to your
growth as a writer. In writing your self-evaluation, you could invoke your
comparison (writing is like . . . ) that you made at
the beginning of class. Do you view writing differently now? Whatever form it
takes, keep the following considerations in mind.
Describe the work -- In describing your essays, give titles and review briefly their purposes and topics. Tell what you were trying to do in that paper, what you were hoping to accomplish, whether or not you think it was successful.
Justify your choice -- When you justify what you see as your "best" work (the 3-4 pages you will read the final week of class), you reveal what standards you have established for yourself about good work. These standards are fundamental to what you have learned.
Part II. Think of what makes good creative nonfiction for
you--What criteria. Then, please discuss at least three essays we have readas models for you, in terms of voice, style, form,
subject, intelligence, surprise, urgency, accuracy, complexity, etc. These
could be your favorites or ones you would consider to be like your own (for
example, to be used as a comparison in a cover or query letter). Discuss what
makes them effective pieces of writing, as models you aspire to, or how they
did something you also hoped to achieve in your own work. Be sure to discuss
the criteria that makes them "good" creative nonfiction. Quote
particular lines to show your analysis. One could come from off our schedule.
Turn in on D2L. This self-evaluation should be about 2-4 pages, double-spaced.
